About Storage Tanks and Pump monitoring
Pump monitoring is a major part of any manufacturing industry.
In a municipality, there is a network of water pipes that routes treated water from a water treatment plant to the residents of the community. In most cases the water is in some form of storage tank, either an elevated tank or standpipe to be used within the day and to make sure the community has fire protection. When these storage tanks are located farther from the plant and the water travels up and down hill, it loses pressure. If the pressure falls below certain critical levels, it creates a health risk, as well as a risk of running out of water. One way to maintain the required pressure is to use a “booster” station. A pump station is composed of a set of pumps that increase the pressure in the line and can be used to fill a downstream storage tank. Because of hydraulics, the storage tank is what is actually maintaining the pressure and the pump station is just used to fill the tank.
Sewage pump stations also known as lift stations, are a major part of a municipal wastewater collection system. In a municipality, there is a network of sewers that convey the sanitary sewer water, and sometimes storm water to a wastewater treatment plant. These sewers operate by utilizing gravity to make the waste water flow downhill. In low areas where water stops before reaching the treatment plant, it must be “lifted” to a higher elevation for the gravity process to continue.
To lift this water to the higher elevation, it is necessary to use pumps. Prior to pumping, water is collected in what is referred to in the industry as a wet well. This is nothing more than a large holding tank usually in the form of an underground concrete vault. Pumps turn on and off based on when this wet well reaches certain levels. At high levels pumps turn on, and at low levels pumps turn off.
When extracting oil from deep within the ground the iconic pump jack comes to mind. Seen in lots of old movies and shows, this pump is made up of several different components that pumps petroleum from deep within the ground up to a holding tank or into a distribution of pipes which eventually end up at a refinery. Keeping these pumps operating at peak efficiency is essential to making money and producing oil. As seen from a Google map over Texas, these structures pepper the landscape for miles. Maintaining each one without remote monitoring can be very inefficient and costly. These pump jacks use energy to operate but not all of them run all the time, only the most efficient ones should be operating. Keeping track of which ones are pumping most efficiently is the daily challenge.
