The only monitoring many clients have is an auto dialer at a lift station that gives a general alarm. These units are difficult to program or reprogram and do not account for vacation schedules or change in personnel. Additionally, when a person gets an alarm they have a limited amount of information and in most cases are required to visit the site in order to identify the trouble. The auto dialer is connected to a dialup phone line which has a monthly reoccurring cost and the client does not know whether it is plug in or working until an event occurs and they do not get an alarm. The cost to the company can be overtime wages, property damage and customer complaints.
In order to get more information or continuous information the company considers some other solutions. Many Lift Stations are located in low lying hard to reach locations so conventional telemetry such as Radio is not practical without tall and expensive radio towers so leased lines are very popular. A Leased line connection can cost as much as $50-100 per month, not very reliable and the technology is outdated so equipment repair and replacement is expensive. Most telephone companies who support these type of lines do not have the staffing to support the antiquated technology.
